This Week in Athletics

Spring sports are upon us as the weather warms up. Baseball and softball, track, golf and tennis practices have heated already with the Knights looking to have a strong season in each sport. Mark Mongiardo leads the baseball team in his second year at the helm. With a good mix of underclassmen to add to the few seniors, the team looks to improve upon last year’s record. Freshman baseball is back also giving the ninth graders a chance to grow. The softball program is led by veteran head coach Mike Mayer. A full slate of games kicks off April 2nd. The team looks strong to this point with 3 all league players returning.

The track is led by long time girls coach Greg Kelly and first year boys coach Jeff Bliss. The team is full of athletes and looks to shine in the spring.

Boys tennis is led by second year coach Joe Manzo. The team returns a young core and should be very competitive in the NJIC. Golf is led by Joe Albanese. With ten golfers, the team has a good group to compete in the very strong NJIC.

New Milford Athletes Honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, each athlete at New Milford High School will wear pink. The soccer teams, girls tennis and volleyball teams as well as the runners in cross country will sport a pink sweatband during games and meets. The football players will also wear pink bands and the cheerleaders will use pink pom poms. This will continue for the month of October. The reception has been great as each boy and girl immediately went pink and showed their true colors. With so many high schools throughout Bergen County involved, the overall participation has raised the awareness and support for breast cancer research.

Message From The Athletic Director

I am pleased that you will be participating in the New Milford High School Athletic program as a student/athlete and spectator this year. As a student/athlete you have the opportunity to enhance your educational experiences, develop skills and achieve personal and team goals. As a parent, you will have the opportunity to see your son/daughter demonstrate his/her talents as an athlete.

The athletic program is an integral part of the high school experience. Athletes, spectators, parents and staff all reap the benefits of a strong program. At NMHS, we are fortunate to have a concerned, enthusiastic and experienced coaching staff. Participation in athletics should be a positive experience for all. A quote which is found in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) handbook states “The member schools, their communities and the whole society desire academic excellence and recognition; activities free from unsportsmanlike acts; and a culture free of substance abuse.” I am sure that we would all agree on those thoughts.

The NJSIAA has specific and strict regulations in respect to academic eligibility (number of credits earned), age and conduct of players, coaches and spectators, etc. Attached is a copy of the NJSIAA’s “The Responsibilities of Sportsmanship” and an acknowledgement form that must be signed by each athlete and parent indicating that they have familiarized themselves with that information. Also attached is an information and acknowledgement form in respect to “Substance Use – Rules, Regulations, and Penalties” which also must be signed prior to participation. In addition, each student and parent must sign the “NJSIAA Steroid Testing Policy Consent To Random Testing” form enacted December 20, 2005 by Governor Richard Codey.

Before participation in athletics, the sportsmanship and substance use acknowledgements, steroid testing consent form, parental consent form, athletic training permit and emergency information sheet must be completed entirely. Additionally, each athlete is required by the New Jersey State Department of Education to have a medical examination prior to the first practice session of a sport.
